back in action
Sam and I drove back into Austin late last night from our adventure in New Orleans. We had a posh hotel on Canal between the French Quarter and Warehouse & Garden Districts with a great veiw of the other hotels on Canal. Burbon street was fun but not as much of an orgy of excitement as I'd imagined - it made me feel old how uninterested I was in it all. My advice to you: don't drink the handgrenades. As for the rest, I'll recap in list form:
- Walking hand in hand with Samantha in the French Quarter
- Taking the streetcar to Audubon park / Tulane Campus and being subsequently devoured by mosquitos on the golf course
- Shopping on Magazine Street after finally figuring out where the shops were
- Exploring the out of the way bars in Faubourg-Marigny
- Finding all the late-night restaurants because Sam & I started each day no earlier than 3pm
- Smoking cigars with my girlfriend in a tourist club on Bourbon
- Setting up a bar in our hotel bathroom
- Making super8mm movies of our escapades
- Beignets & Cafe au Lait @ Cafe du Monde
But by and large, the best part of the trip was simply being with Sam. I'd never before been on a trip where the destination took a back seat to my companion. We could have really been anywhere and just as much fun together, but I'm glad we were in New Orleans. Now I'm glad to to be back home in Austin.

slippery as an idaho (in a bag of nevadas)
Spring break is here and Sam & I are hotfooting to the Big Easy in just a few hours. Initially we were going to go to Las Vegas with my sister and her husband, but that plan sort of fell apart. If we'd decided to stay in Austin, I'd feel compelled to work at SXSW, but since I never bothered signing up to volunteer (because we were going to Vegas), I'd just wind up being annoyed at the swarms of tourists all over my favorite haunts. And while New Orleans too will be filthy with collegiate spring-breakers and their sophomoric hijinks, I'm happy for a change of scene. Furthermore, the Crescent City has been on my mind for some time and this trip will either entrench my fantasy or squash it; either way, it's high time for a roadtrip. We'll return just in time for me to work through the SXSW music festival. I do intend to take advantage of some of the free daytime shows when I get back, especially the fader / levi's showcase which will feature The Decemberists (3/19), and a tag-team DJ set with David Cross and the father of the giant's posse, Shepherd Fairey (3/2). *love, r.

these pretzels are making me thirsty!
Not to plug a corporate monster record store or anything, but Tower Records has a remarkably nice selection of alternative magazines. I went there yesterday looking for the new McSweeney's, but I guess its not out yet (I've always had trouble reconciling the publishing dates on magazines). Since I was already planning on dropping twenty bucks on glossy rags, I grabbed a handful of amusing alternative pubs including Modern Drunkard which is like the son I've always wanted but never had. Each issue is chock full of articles with titles like how to drink your way to health (2), the zen of drinking alone, and how to ace an intervention. Yet what sold me on this month's issue was a list of 40 Things Every Drunk Should Do. I shed a single tear over how many of the items I hadn't done:
#5: Spend a night in a drunk tank
#19: Sit in on an A.A. meeting
#9: Get 86'ed from a bar
#6: Get drunk on the grave of your hero
#1: Open and close a bar
... Just to name a few... But as lugubrious as the incompleteness of this list made me, it also filled me with hope. I was reminded that I still have plenty of years and thousands of miles left on my liver to become an utter lush and that gives me strength. And courage. Liquid courage called alcohol. *love, r.
